DavyMarkham was sub-contracted by structural steelwork specialists, Watson Steel Structures of Bolton, and worked closely with the company on the fabrication, assembly and machining of the mast sections, each around 12m long and weighing 80 tonnes, as well as the development of the manufacturing methodology for this ground-breaking iconic structure.
DavyMarkham were selected by Watson Steel Structures to manufacture 24 stainless steel downpipes. The fabrication contract involved complex 3D computer modelling and engineering geometry for the square-profile top hoppers, to meet the architect’s aesthetic and performance requirements, and necessitated various advanced welding techniques.
To prevent possible contamination, the stainless steel downpipes were jigged up and assembled in a dedicated fabrication shop, to MoD manufacturing standards, and the finished assemblies were glass bead blasted, for an overall satin finish. The down pipes are designed for high rainwater loadings, up to 100 litres / sec, and the spiral strakes were initially wind tunnel tested by Watson Steel, to counter the effects of vortex induced vibrations on the slender tubular structures.
DavyMarkham fabricated Britain’s tallest sculpture, approximately the height of a 20-storey building at 56 metres (184 feet) and weighing 150 tonnes, at its giant Prince of Wales Road works in Sheffield.
B of the Bang was commissioned to mark the success of the Manchester Commonwealth Games and has been installed outside the city’s newest stadium, It was created by renowned artist and former Manchester Polytechnic and Royal College student, Thomas Heatherwick, and has been acclaimed ‘a major feat of engineering, as well as a striking piece of design’.
