£6.5 Million Mine Hoist Order 14/04/2008
Davy Markham has secured an important £6.5 million (approx $13 million CAD) export order from leading Canadian mining and refining company, CVRD Inco Limited, the world's largest nickel producer.The contract is for a dual-purpose, double drum, 16' 6" diameter mine hoist, which will be used for skipping and personnel handling duties at the newly-reopened Totten #2 shaft, on the edge of the Sudbury Basin in Northern Ontario, the largest concentration of nickel-copper bearing minerals in the world.Nickel is in increasing global demand, as a key component in the production of stainless steel and rechargeable batteries for hybrid electrical vehicles such as the Toyota Prius, and CVRD Inco commands some 20% of global sales. Full story Former Lathe Turner, John Watson, Is Appointed Production Director 10/01/2008 Sheffield heavy engineering concern, Davy Markham, which markets machinery and equipment across the world, has appointed John Watson as its new Production Director, in which capacity he will manage the firm's programme of continuous manufacturing improvement and assist in implementing strategies for increased productivity.Having joined the company as a lathe turner in 1988, John was transferred temporarily from the shop floor just three years later, in order to gain experience of non-production processes, and never returned to his original job, subsequently rising through the management ranks and in the process gaining an Institute of Management degree. Full story DavyMarkham Gains Notable Historic Bridge Conservation Award 27/04/2007 Sheffield heavy engineering company, DavyMarkham, has been recognised in the Institution Of Civil Engineers' distinguished Historic Bridges & Infrastructures Awards 2007, for its painstaking restoration of Hull's historic Wellington Street swing bridge.Co-sponsored by English Heritage, British Waterways and the Country Surveyors' Society, the annual awards promote and celebrate excellence and innovation in the conservation of transport-related structures, over thirty years old.The judges commended the bridge's 'careful refurbishment in a modern context', reflecting DavyMarkham's use of advanced 3D modelling and finite element analysis software on the project, and noted how the engineering restoration 'brought back to life a fine example of Victorian innovation and creativity'.The client was Kingston upon Hull City Council and its urban regeneration company, Citybuild, while the consulting engineer was London-based Pell Frischmann. Full story Recycled and Remanufactured Hoist For Canada Gold Mine 01/04/2007 Sheffield heavy engineering company, DavyMarkham has been awarded a contract for the mechanical parts of a new 16ft (4.89m) double drum hoist, for use underground at the largest gold mine in Canada.This follows a competitive tender call issued by Agnico-Eagle Mines, one of North America's leading mineral exploration companies, with more than 30 years' continuous experience of gold production, mainly through underground operations.The hoist will be deployed for shaft sinking, then production duties on the LaRonde II project, the 3300m (2 miles) deep extension to the current LaRonde operation, based around 650km northwest of Montreal. Full story TBM Cutter Head Fabrications For Niagara Falls Hydro Project 23/03/2007 Sheffield engineering company DavyMarkham has produced the giant cutter head support and final drive housing support for the world's largest hard rock TBM (tunnel boring machine), to be deployed on a landmark Niagara Falls hydroelectric project.The £1/2 million contract was placed by the Robbins company of Ohio, a world leader in the design and manufacture of TBMs and underground excavation equipment, with whom DavyMarkham has a long-standing business association, dating back to the joint venture production of two marine running TBMs for the Channel Tunnel, itself dubbed 'The project of the Century'. Full story Dedicated New Reconditioning Service With Fast-Track Capability 15/02/2007 Sheffield engineering company, DavyMarkham has announced the introduction of a new dedicated Reconditioning Service, at its Darnall Works.It includes a fast-track capacity able to respond within 24 hours to emergency breakdowns and factory shutdowns, working round-the-clock to inspect, repair and test mechanical equipment.Born out of the company's long history of manufacturing steel plant, heavy mining & tunnelling machinery and capital equipment, the service is able to undertake the reconditioning of roll chocks, mill spindles and couplings, AGC capsules, plate levellers, rolling mill housings, heavy presses, hydro turbines, rock crushing and tunnelling machines, complete gearboxes and other complex equipment.
