Apprentice Scheme Approved By Institution Of Mechanical Engineers | |
The highly regarded DavyMarkham apprenticeship scheme has now been officially accredited by the country's leading professional engineering body, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The scheme, which was successfully revived by the Sheffield heavy engineering firm two years ago, having been discontinued by previous management, has been approved under the institution's Engineering Technician Development Scheme and all DavyMarkham apprentices are now affiliate members of IMechE. Upon completion of their 3 or 4 year apprenticeships, they will be eligible to apply for Engineering Technician status and to use the letters EngTech MIMechE after their names.
IMechE's Regional Manager, Dennis Healey (pictured above right), visited the Sheffield plant recently and presented a framed certificate to DavyMarkham MD, Kevin Parkin, before a group of young trainees. The apprenticeship programme underwent a formal approvals process to achieve certification and it demonstrates the company's commitment to the career development of its young engineers, as well as aiding the recruitment of further apprentices.
"The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is an important professional body, with a 160 year heritage, which seeks to inspire, prepare and support tomorrow's engineers," says Kevin Parkin. "Its approval and endorsement of our apprenticeship scheme adds credibility to our training initiative and provides an important stepping stone in the career path to becoming Chartered or Incorporated Engineers. It also highlights to young school leavers that there is an alternative to university, where you can contribute to Britain's manufacturing economy and still get letters after your name."
