As part of his bid to promote the importance of the ‘Made in Sheffield’ brand and focus on the many world-class businesses in the region, newly-installed Master Cutler, Gordon Bridge, and his Senior Warden, Martin Howell, visited the city’s largest heavy engineering concern, DavyMarkham, this week. The subject of a management buyout earlier this year and now restored to local ownership, the Prince of Wales Road works has an extremely strong manufacturing tradition, specialising in mine winding equipment, steel processing plant, tunnel boring machinery, hydroelectric projects and moving bridges and steel structures. |

Having met with DavyMarkham MD, Kevin Parkin, and Chairman, Ian Forbes, Gordon Bridge and Martin Howell toured the plant, one of the largest of its kind in Western Europe, and were impressed by the scale and quality of the engineering operation, viewing jobs destined for as far afield as China, India and North America. Mr Bridge noted that the Sheffield company had successfully survived a major recession and is now trading on the world market, exporting to many countries and helping to sustain the status of the Made in Sheffield brand. He also praised DavyMarkham for taking a lead in securing the necessary job skills for the future, by recently reinstating its highly-regarded apprenticeship scheme. |

In his role as Master Cutler, Mr Bridge promised to promote DavyMarkham and other local manufacturing companies to officials, businessmen and professionals in the City, so as to implement a stronger working relationship, for the good of the Sheffield economy.
“We were delighted to welcome the Master Cutler and his Senior Warden and pleased they took time out to visit our premises, so early in Gordon’s term of office,” says Kevin Parkin. “He has called for an increased focus on entrepreneurship in the manufacturing heartlands of the Sheffield region and his visit certainly helps to achieve that.” |
