DavyMarkham Participates In One-Day Coal Conference
Kevin Parkin, MD of Sheffield heavy engineering company DavyMarkham, is pictured with the Rt Hon John Prescott MP at a recent one-day conference staged at the University of Sheffield and supported by the Coalfield Regeneration Trust, headlined Coal: The Social, Economic, Regeneration and Climate Change Opportunities. Involving a series of eminent guest speakers from the worlds of politics, business and academia, the event was hosted by the former Deputy Prime Minister, who also delivered the keynote address, and was introduced by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, the Rt Hon Ed Miliband, MP for Doncaster North.

The focus was on the positive contribution of coal to global power generation, Government policy for the industry and future techniques and knowledge exchange in the mining and burning of coal. DavyMarkham, which in the recent past produced the majority of mine hoists for the UK coal industry, felt it could become usefully involved in the design and manufacture of equipment to assist in the more efficient burning of coal, as well as the storage of CO2 in underground facilities and the processing of material at mines and power stations. The company exhibited at the conference and was part-sponsor of a seminar.

"With our unrivalled background in mine winder technology, we feel we have plenty to contribute toward the future production of safe, efficient mine hoisting equipment. Whilst our experience of the nuclear energy and hydraulic power industries mean we can contribute meaningfully to the knowledge exchange process," says Kevin Parkin. "It is good to see Sheffield as the focal point for debate in this country and encouraging to see John Prescott taking a hands-on interest."
