Pictured is Rt Hon Lord Mandelson, First Secretary of State and Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, visiting DavyMarkham's stand at Unite the Union's 'New Energy Brings New Opportunity' conference in London. The Sheffield heavy engineering company recently joined a consortium to bid for construction of the ITER fusion reactor vessel and was represented at the nuclear energy conference by Managing Director, Kevin Parkin, and two members of the firm's Joint Shop Stewards Committee, Sam Wragg and Brian Straw.
At the event, Unite's National Officer, Dougie Rooney, who visited DavyMarkham's works last month, said: "Nuclear power is key to meeting our future energy needs. With the right support from the UK government, Britain could become the centre for a global engineering supply chain and 10,000 skilled manufacturing jobs would be created as a result."
In a statement issued by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, Lord Mandelson commented: "We have a nuclear heritage, with a strong skill base in this country. We've been building, managing and now decommissioning reactors for more than forty years. It's a growth market and a global market and we need to be part of it."
Keenly aware that UK Engineering can be a key player in supplying the world with nuclear power equipment, the DavyMarkham management and workforce are actively promoting the Sheffield company's highly relevant, precision heavy engineering skills and embracing the new technologies, working practices and quality systems needed to compete in this sector The firm's participation in Unite's New Energy conference underlines that goal and helped raise its profile in the potential nuclear supply chain.
