Leading UK heavy engineering concern, DavyMarkham of Sheffield, is nearing completion of two 10.3m (40ft) diameter cutterheads, which will be fitted to the front ends of tunnel boring machines being built by the Robbins Company of Ohio, for a major railroad tunnel project in China.Each 226 tonne cutterhead will be despatched in modular components to the company's TBM assembly facility near Chendu, Sichuan Province, home of the giant panda.After the machines have been assembled and tested in the factory, they will be disassembled and sent to a remote location in Gansu Province, where the TBMs and cutterheads will be reassembled by local labour. 'Ultimate 50 Year Service' For Valdunes Forging Press In France 20/08/2008
The newly-formed dedicated Reconditioning Service at Sheffield heavy engineering company, DavyMarkham, has overseen the refurbishment and technical upgrading of a Davy 6000 tonne forging press for Valdunes of Dunkerque, one of the world's leading manufacturers of railway wheels and axles.The press was originally supplied by the Sheffield works in 1956 and has since produced literally millions of forged wheels, at a rate of around one wheel every minute, eventually necessitating the most extensive overhaul in its history.Representing perhaps 'the ultimate 50 year service', the DavyMarkham refurbishment package totalled £1/2 million and returned the machine to better than original condition, complete with new columns, bearings and high tech tensioners, delivering very substantial savings over new capital equipment costs and minimising operational downtime. The highlight of the Sheffield social calendar is, without doubt, the Cutlers' Feast, which has been held every year since 1682.This year's Feast, hosted by the current Master Cutler, Gordon Bridge, was attended by 375 guests including nobility, dignitaries, leading local and national industrialists, and Freemen of the Cutlers' Company.The principal guest and speaker this year was the Rt Hon William Hague MP, who returned to Sheffield for his second Cutlers' Feast. 320T Cutterhead For China's Biggest TBM Tunnelling Project 01/05/2008
Sheffield heavy engineering company DavyMarkham has fabricated and shipped a 320 tonne cutterhead for a 12.4m diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM), being built by The Robbins Company of Ohio, the world's foremost manufacturer of underground construction machinery.It has been despatched to the mountains of Sichuan Province, China, where it will be instrumental in one of the biggest TBM-driven tunnelling projects in Chinese history, for the new 4,800MW Jinping II hydropower station on the Yalong River.Once completed in 2010, this will be the largest power station in an ambitious project for owners Ertan Hydropower Development Company, which will transmit electricity to many eastern provinces and such cities as Shanghai and Beijing. £6.5 Million Mine Hoist Order 14/04/2008
Davy Markham has secured an important £6.5 million (approx $13 million CAD) export order from leading Canadian mining and refining company, CVRD Inco Limited, the world's largest nickel producer.The contract is for a dual-purpose, double drum, 16' 6" diameter mine hoist, which will be used for skipping and personnel handling duties at the newly-reopened Totten #2 shaft, on the edge of the Sudbury Basin in Northern Ontario, the largest concentration of nickel-copper bearing minerals in the world.Nickel is in increasing global demand, as a key component in the production of stainless steel and rechargeable batteries for hybrid electrical vehicles such as the Toyota Prius, and CVRD Inco commands some 20% of global sales. Sheffield heavy engineering concern, Davy Markham, which markets machinery and equipment across the world, has appointed John Watson as its new Production Director, in which capacity he will manage the firm's programme of continuous manufacturing improvement and assist in implementing strategies for increased productivity.Having joined the company as a lathe turner in 1988, John was transferred temporarily from the shop floor just three years later, in order to gain experience of non-production processes, and never returned to his original job, subsequently rising through the management ranks and in the process gaining an Institute of Management degree. 2007 DavyMarkham Re-establishes Engineering Apprenticeships 15/10/2007
Sheffield heavy engineering concern DavyMarkham, now under new ownership following a recent MBO and currently enjoying strong order books, has renewed its in-house apprenticeship scheme, after a twenty year gap.The first cohort of seven apprentices has already begun a 3-4 year programme, which will lead to NVQ Level 3 and BTEC diploma qualifications, and the company is now looking to recruit further trainees for the next intake.The scheme has a strong local content, being managed by The Metals Academy of Sheffield and involving training courses delivered by Rotherham College of Arts & Technology and the Strategic Training Partnership (STP) of Rotherham.It has been welcomed by Sir Bob Kerslake, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, and by the regional office of Unite the Union, Britain's biggest trade union, which counts many members amongst the workforce at DavyMarkham's Darnall Works on Prince of Wales Road.Full story

Sheffield heavy engineering company, DavyMarkham, has been recognised in the Institution Of Civil Engineers' distinguished Historic Bridges & Infrastructures Awards 2007, for its painstaking restoration of Hull's historic Wellington Street swing bridge.Co-sponsored by English Heritage, British Waterways and the Country Surveyors' Society, the annual awards promote and celebrate excellence and innovation in the conservation of transport-related structures, over thirty years old.The judges commended the bridge's 'careful refurbishment in a modern context', reflecting DavyMarkham's use of advanced 3D modelling and finite element analysis software on the project, and noted how the engineering restoration 'brought back to life a fine example of Victorian innovation and creativity'.The client was Kingston upon Hull City Council and its urban regeneration company, Citybuild, while the consulting engineer was London-based Pell Frischmann. Sheffield heavy engineering company, DavyMarkham has been awarded a contract for the mechanical parts of a new 16ft (4.89m) double drum hoist, for use underground at the largest gold mine in Canada.This follows a competitive tender call issued by Agnico-Eagle Mines, one of North America's leading mineral exploration companies, with more than 30 years' continuous experience of gold production, mainly through underground operations.The hoist will be deployed for shaft sinking, then production duties on the LaRonde II project, the 3300m (2 miles) deep extension to the current LaRonde operation, based around 650km northwest of Montreal. Biggest-Ever Machined Castings For Biggest-Ever Screw Press 05/01/2006
Roads in Sheffield were closed and nighttime traffic diverted on two occasions recently, as the western world's largest steel castings, each weighing around 350 tonnes or the equivalent of 45 London Routemaster buses, were hauled by 72-wheel transporters from Sheffield Forgemasters across town to the DavyMarkham engineering works in Prince of Wales Road.The castings, each poured from almost 600 tonnes of liquid steel and eventually machined to precision tolerances of +/- 0.1mm, are solid testimony to the world class metallurgy, casting, machining and logistical skills of British industry generally and two long-standing Sheffield companies in particular.
