DavyMarkham - Apprenticeships
If you have left school or are about to do so and hope to gain or have gained good GCSE results, with the desire to work in the heavy engineering sector, and at the same time study towards a vocational qualification, why not consider working at Davy Markham as an Advanced Apprentice.

Having one of the most modern heavy engineering facilities in the world, with computer controlled machine tools and design facilities, in addition to the ability to handle complex components with a weight of up to 350 tonnes Davy Markham survival depends on well trained and highly skilled people.

With this background a robust apprentice scheme is vital to the company’s survival in an ever increasing international competitive market; the company believes motivated and talented young people with a desire to succeed are an essential investment for the companies continued success.

Whilst we normally recruit at the end of the academic year, we are always keen to talk to potential apprentices with the correct qualities at any time of the year.

In order to be considered for a place on the apprenticeship scheme we require a minimum of five GCSEs grade C or better, including Maths, English and a Science, just as importantly though you must be able to demonstrate during the selection process that you have a genuine desire to work in the heavy engineering sector and develop into to one of our highly skilled manufacturing technicians.

The company’s apprentices enjoy a salary second to none in the area, with excellent conditions of employment.

The apprenticeship last between three to four years dependant on competence and commitment, and follows a structured national standard and is as follows;
  • A minimum of six months in an external off the job training centre to complete an NVQ 2 in basic engineering studies and key skills.
  • On return to Davy Markham a period in our on site training centre, producing precision components to company standards and studying workshop maths.
  • Working in the main workshops to NVQ level 3 levels in your chosen discipline.
During this period apprentices will be expected to attend a local college to complete vocational studies in an engineering related subject such as City and Guilds or a B-Tech National.

The complex and demanding work carried out at Davy Markham’s workshops requires competent people in many skill areas, and consequently the apprenticeships available with the company are as follows;
  • CNC Machining
  • Production Fitting
  • Fabrication and Welding
  • Maintenance Fitting (Mechanical and Electrical)
Many of the company’s apprentices have continued with further education long after completion of the apprenticeship program, in some cases to degree level and full acceptance with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers to Corporate Membership.
