DavyMarkham has at its disposal a unique manufacturing facility in excess of 10,000 square meters incorporating Design, Medium to Heavy Machining, Fabrication, Stress relieving and Complex Assembly.
In addition to these services DavyMarkham can also provide Shot Blasting and Painting facilities. DavyMarkham are capable of providing complex and precision engineering products from large Turnkey projects to refurbishment services of Capital plant over a wide range of business sectors including but not limited to Steel, Quarrying and Energy.
With a highly skilled, flexible and dedicated workforce along with a lifting capacity up to 350 ton, General Engineering Services are more than capable of taking on any size engineering or refurbishment project. DavyMarkham also offer subcontract machining services to a wide and diverse market place, right through from the initial enquiry stage to contract execution.
Scope: Finish Machine Castings
Mill designer Siemens VAI (now Primetals Technologies Austria GmbH) awarded a multi-million pound contract to Sheffield Forgemasters to make three castings weighing between 150 and 300 tonnes for a US hot rolling mill.
The new mill will be part of an advanced speciality metals hot-rolling and processing facility for Allegheny Technologies Incorporated in Pennsylvania. The rolling forces applied during the mill’s operation will be among the highest ever to be applied in a hot-strip mill so the structural integrity of the ultra-large castings was critical.
The three castings consisted of two 13.5m tall by 5.2m wide roughing mill housing at 300t each and an edger housing at 160t.
DavyMarkham supported Forgemasters to machine finish the castings to extremely high tolerances, painted, fitted them with additional components and completed a full trial assembly prior to despatching them in 2012 from DavyMarkham’s workshops in Sheffield.

Scope: Reversing Rougher Roller Table
The Tata Steel Group has operations in 26 countries and produces 28 million tonnes of steel per year. Tata Steel is the 2nd largest steel producer in Europe supplying some of the most demanding markets worldwide including automotive, construction, packaging and engineering.
Port Talbot Works is part of the Strip Products UK business producing hot rolled, cold rolled and hot dip coated steel. The Hot Strip Mill rolls steel into continuous strip, forming ‘hot rolled coil’. The steel coil is then processed at Tata Steel sites in Wales and England, before being delivered to manufacturers. The Hot Strip Mill is a vital area in the steelworks and required a major upgrade to help improve the quality of the steel products.
DavyMarkham was commissioned to manufacture a replacement reversing rougher main ingoing roller table, as part of the refurbishment programme. The roller table consisted of 20 roller assemblies; each weighing 3 tonne with a 450mm diameter and 3200mm in length. Each roll was machined to very high dimensional and geometric standards. Following machining, each of the rolls was supported by roller bearings and assembled into chocks before being fitted onto a lined and levelled support frame. DavyMarkham fabricated, machined, shot blasted and painted the support frame.
After the roll assemblies had been secured to the support frame, DavyMarkham supplied and fitted the bearing lubrication system which feeds grease to each bearing assembly.
DavyMarkham also procured the roller table input and motor output drive couplings and the cardan shafts.
The completed roller table including the roll drive flanges had an overall length of 20m, a 5m width and a total weight of 120 tonne. It was delivered in two 10m sections along with a full quality pack containing all dimensional and material certification.
The project was completed ahead of time and within budget.
